AIHM’s Oral History Narrative is a speaker series highlighting known figures, personalities and “everyday people” representing a wide range of ethnicities and cultural perspectives.
The oral history series explores the history, culture, and experience of diverse Muslim communities that have established themselves in America, documents their similarities and differences, and examines the potential of cultural inclusion and understanding found amongst and throughout the US. The series presents stories and perspectives from the people and cultures that have traditionally been excluded from the American historical narrative, particularly to ensure that the museum’s pluralistic representation is reflected in American history.
Current Programs (Mostly Virtual)
The Community Outreach Program lays the foundation for deeper exploration into the museum community as a social development tool; where AIHM partners with local community organizations, religious institutions and government initiatives to provide targeted social services to this high risk, high needs community (Ward 8).
By virtue of its prime location, within walking distance from high schools and the Anacostia Metro Station, AIHM is ideally positioned on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., to become a hub for youth and young adults, to access social services “en route”. AIHM will also utilize the Community Outreach program to tap the information technology and business professionals from the Muslim community to mentor and provide skills development workshops for the unemployed of Ward 8 neighborhoods. Aside from facilitating technical skills, AIHM encourages dialogue amongst the various groups on how to overcome challenges and establish new beginnings. Community Outreach provides space to other Inner City groups, to hold sessions for adults and youth.

Arts & Culture
CONNECTING PEOPLE THROUGH THE ARTS, HISTORY & CULTURE
Designed to show case and provide to artists Muslim and non-Muslim a public venue, access and exposure to the local community. The programming consist of diverse range of the arts short plays, films, book signings, discussions, cultural art exhibits, performing artist, and various cultural forms of expressions to highlight cultural diversity, creativity, and to build appreciation for the arts. The museum is a place where artists partner with community organizations to reach American urban youth. The impact of the arts experience and historical context of AIHM on young people help American students learn; enhance creativity, self-discipline, self-esteem, and develop the skills and confidence needed to meet today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.

FEEDING THE COMMUNITY
We provide two types of services and programs, one around arts, culture, and humanities topics, the second around service to humanities with food aid and youth service programs.
- Our pandemic emergency food aid programs consist of bi-weekly Tuesday and Thursday lunch program for 220 people, a monthly hot meal for 150 people, and a monthly grocery food distribution for families.
- Our normal community engagement program provide daily afterschool snacks, a youth weekly mentoring program, a monthly hot meal for 125 people, and a monthly food distribution for families.
During the month of Ramadan we feed on average around 800 people during the month for our Iftars, or traditional breaking of the fast. Some of our guests have been Farah Pandith, Special Representative to Muslim Communities for the US Department of State; Rashad Hussain, US Special Envoy to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation; Dr. Yasar Colak, Social and Religious Affairs Counselor for Turkey; Dr. Sulayman Nyang; Paul Monteiro, the White House Associate Director of the Office of Public Engagement; representatives from both the Embassies of the State of Qatar, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and others have spoken at AIHM Iftars.
